Faith in Modern Society

Ross Douthat has this interesting piece in the Times today. He speaks about how our religious experience has become more “American,” more democratized, and how that has harmed what the tradition knows as true religious experience. We tend to dabble in things rather than abide in Him. The secular forces driving much of our lives–deadlines, expectations, and mass-market availability of just about anything–have been translated to our spiritual lives and made our religious experiences something other than a search for the one true God. This is a good reflection as we come to the middle of Lent. (The MIDDLE of Lent already?! Yikes!)
