Austin Ruse of C-FAM writes here that President Obama is seeking to silence Archbishop Burke from speaking out against the HHS nominee, Kathleen Sebelius. It seems a bit odd that Obama is trying to pick a fight that was settled almost a millennium ago.
As you recall, the year 1075 brought with it the Dictatus Papae of Gregory VII and the beginning of the so-called Investiture Controversy. The basic question involved: Who has control–the State or the Church?
Obama’s power grab is yet another questionable move by this administration to usurp the religious liberties of Americans, and now some of the most prominent religious Americans, Catholic bishops. This is, perhaps, a good Lenten meditation on the cost of discipleship. It could also be, sadly, a sign of things to come.
